If you’re searching for a dramatic, cinematic beach location in San Diego, few places compare to Windansea Beach. Known for its rugged cliffs, textured sandstone, crashing waves, and iconic surf shacks, Windansea Beach is one of my favorite locations for cinematic couples sessions, engagement photos, elopements, and intimate weddings in Southern California.

Landscape can do a lot of storytelling, and Windansea makes for an unforgettable backdrop.

Best Time of Day for Photos at Windansea Beach


Lighting matters deeply at Windansea Beach, and timing can make or break a session. Golden hour is best — typically the last 60–90 minutes before sunset. During this time, the cliffs glow warm, the shadows soften, and the ocean reflects a cinematic palette of blues and golds. Midday sessions are possible, but the light is harsher and shadows are more intense. For the most flattering and emotional imagery, I always recommend sunset sessions here.

Accessibility & Terrain: What to Know Before You Go


Windansea Beach offers varying levels of accessibility depending on where you want to shoot.

• Cliffside areas: Moderate accessibility (about 7/10)

• Beach access: Requires walking and navigating rocky terrain

• Not ideal for: Late-term maternity sessions or clients with limited mobility

Crowds, Privacy & What to Expect


Windansea Beach is a public beach and a popular surf spot, especially on weekends.

• Weekdays tend to be quieter

• Summer evenings can be busier, particularly on the weekends

• Complete privacy can’t be guaranteed, but during the week there should be plenty of spots where we can make some intimate moments


While there may be a small crowd, rest assured that I can edit people out of backgrounds
