How to Make Your Couples Session Feel Natural (Even if You’re Camera Shy)


Some of my most beautiful, cinematic photos I have captured started with couples who said, "We're awkward in front of the camera." I am here to tell you that you don't need to be a model to have dreamy and romantic photos. You just need to pick a photographer with the right energy. I always tell my clients that shy people are my favorite people to work with - I even like to mention that I specialize in working with wallflowers! It's okay to start out a little nervous for your session, but my goal by the end is to make sure that you're feeling amazing and confident by the end of it.

If you’re planning your engagement session in San Diego, a maternity photoshoot at the beach, or just a couples session to celebrate your love, here are my favorite tips to help your photos feel natural—even if you’re camera shy.

FOCUS ON EACH OTHER, NOT THE CAMERA


Good photos means having a good connection, not only with your photographer, but also with each other. Instead of thinking about where to look or how to pose, focus on your partner. Whisper something silly in their ear, grab their hand if you're feeling a little nervous, take a deep breath together. When you take a second to focus on each other, your body naturally relaxes, and that segways into your photos becoming authentic.


Pro tip: Dad jokes help.


ADD MOVEMENT


Cinematic photography THRIVES on motion. Movement not only adds drama and energy to your photos, but it also helps to shake off that stiffness you may be feeling. Twirl around in the sand, walk toward me holding hands, or throw your arms around your partner in a big ol' bear hug. These little actions create candid movements.

WEAR THINGS THAT MAKE YOU FEEL CONFIDENT


Outfits matter more than you think. When you're wearing clothes that you feel good in and also feel good to wear, it shows in your body language. Flowing dresses look incredible in motion, while neutral and earthy tones always photograph beautifully against the San Diego coast.


For couples, coordinating without matching is key—think textures, layers, and tones that complement each other. If you’re doing a beach engagement shoot, a bold dress (like red, emerald, or deep rust) can pop against the moody skies and ocean waves, giving you that fine art, cinematic feel.

TRUST YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER (hi hello, that's me!)


Here's my secret to how I get the amazing photos that I do: you don't have to know how to pose. That's my job. Throughout your session I will utilize a ton of prompts to incorporate a lot of movement into the session.  I’ll guide you with actions like, “Walk toward me and bump hips like you’re kids again,” or “Hold her face like you’re about to kiss for the first time.” These little prompts keep you moving, laughing, and connecting, which means the photos feel raw, emotional, and authentic!


In fact, if you're shopping around for photographers, always ask about how they do with posing their clients. If they say that they leave all the posing up to you, I would think long and hard about going in that direction. I've heard of so many horror stories where an entire gallery was filled with the same 2 poses because the photographer didn't guide the couple into anything else. Don't let this be you - make sure you choose a photographer that will take the reins on this. It's half the job as the photographer, and I am always amazed at how negligent people can be about that.


REMEMBER WHY YOU'RE HERE


At the end of the day, a couples session isn’t just about photos—it’s about celebrating your connection. Whether it’s your engagement session in La Jolla, your maternity shoot in Coronado, or a just-because couples photoshoot in Del Mar, it’s a chance to pause, be present with each other, and create memories. When you focus on that, the nerves fade and the real magic happens.


Being camera shy is completely normal. But with movement, connection, and a little guidance, you’ll be surprised at how effortless your photos feel. The clouds, the ocean, the cliffs—they’re just the backdrop. The real story is the two of you, exactly as you are. Most of the time, my couples leave saying, “That was way more fun than we expected!” That’s always the goal.
