WHEN SHOULD YOU BOOK YOUR SENIOR SESSION?
Sooner than you think.
If you’re a high school senior (or a parent of one) in San Diego, you’ve probably already started hearing the buzz: “When should I book my senior portraits?” If you have a specific photographer, vibe, or location in mind, you’re going to want to consider booking your Senior Session sooner rather than later.
As a San Diego senior photographer, I’ve seen the scramble happen every single year — students wait until the last minute, only to find out the best dates and locations are already booked solid. If you want your session to feel like a stress-free experience, timing truly matters.
THE BEST TIME OF YEAR FOR A SENIOR SESSION
We’re blessed here in San Diego with incredibly temperate weather year-round. While we do have the gift of golden light year-round, some months are truly perfect for senior portrait photography:
- Late Summer (August – September): Warm tones, long golden hours, and that “end of summer” vibe before school gets too hectic.
- Fall (October – November): Cooler weather, dreamy sunsets, and plenty of time before yearbook deadlines. This is the most popular season for high school senior portraits in San Diego.
- Spring (March – May): Wildflowers, green backdrops, and a sense of fresh beginnings. If you missed fall, spring is your moment.
So this begs the question… when should you reach out to get on the calendar? Some photographers book themselves up months or even years in advance, so if you have your eye on someone popular, you’re going to want to contact them ASAP.
Booking with me personally, I do generally recommend that people with limited availability (such as only being able to book on the weekend) reach out 2-3 months ahead of time. If you have weekday availability I generally have a little more flexibility, so I recommend booking 1-2 months ahead of time.
WHY YOU SHOULDN’T WAIT
Booking your San Diego senior session early isn’t just about snagging a date on my calendar (though trust me, those weekend slots go fast). It’s also about:
- Yearbook Deadlines: Most schools in San Diego require senior photos to be submitted by late fall or early winter.
- Wardrobe Planning: Choosing cinematic outfits takes time. Booking early gives you space to shop, plan, and perfect your look.
- Flexibility with Locations: The earlier you book, the more freedom you’ll have to choose dreamy spots like the beach at Crystal Cove, Sunset Cliffs, or a hidden North County gem.
WHEN SHOULD YOU REACH OUT?
If you’re graduating in 2026, you should be reaching out to book your senior photo session by spring or summer of 2025. If you’re graduating in 2027, you should plan to reach out to book by spring of 2026. If you’re a little late to the game, that’s okay! Reach out anyway - and if I can’t fit you in, I’ll refer you to some people who may be able to. That way, you’ll have your pick of dates, outfits, and cinematic San Diego backdrops.
I recommend:
- Spring of junior year → start planning.
- Summer before senior year → book your spot.
- Fall of senior year → have your photos done and ready to submit.
